He remains in the NFL’s top 20 in career interceptions. Lem Barney played his entire 11-year career with the Detroit Lions and finished his career with 1,312 punt return yards and two touchdowns, 1,274 kick return yards and one touchdown, and 56 career interceptions, 1,077 return yards and seven interception returns for touchdowns. ![]() Barney is arguably the greatest cornerback to ever play for the Detroit Lions and shares his retired number “20” with fellow Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. ![]() In 19, barney was named to the NFL All-Pro First Teams. Lem led the NFL twice in punt returns for touchdowns, twice in interception returns for touchdowns and once in interceptions, interception return yards, fumble recoveries and fumble recovery return yards. He also earned his first of seven trips to the NFL Pro Bowl. Barney tied for the league lead in interceptions with 10 and led the league with 232 return yards and three touchdowns en route to the 1967 NFL AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Though he was originally tested as a wide receiver, due to his superior speed and exceptional hands, Barney easily settled in to the cornerback role because his innate defensive ability marked by knowing where the ball would be and positioning himself to make a play. The Detroit Lions took Lem in the second round of the 1967 NFL Draft out of Jackson State University.
